Now available from OPTP, Minneapolis, is the Why Do I Hurt? Workbook, an educational resource for chronic pain patients by Adriaan Louw, PT, PhD.

Via the workbook, which can be used by itself or as a complement to the Why Do I Hurt? series, patients in pain track their pain and their journey in relieving it. In addition, the workbook contains interactive exercises and hands-on tasks to help pain patients understand why they hurt and how they can lessen it.

The 35-page softcover workbook features neuroscience concepts and illustrations from Louw’s Why Do I Hurt? patient handbook. Its content is based on scientific research and centers around “the four pillars” of recovery, OPTP notes in a media release.

Updated WellnessPro Plus Designed to Expand Available Pain Treatment Modalities

Bioelectronic medicine company ElectroMedical Technologies announces the WellnessPro Plus, which according to the company enhances the WellnessPro platform by expanding the pain treatment modalities available in a single device.

The portable WellnessPro platform stimulates the peripheral nerves that send information about touch and vibration. The signals from the stimulated nerves interfere with pain signals traveling to the brain, which reduces the brain’s perception of pain, and stimulate naturally occurring pain relievers, the company notes in a media release.

The device delivers pain relief via DeepPulse technology, which the Phoenix-based company suggests helps prevent accommodation, in which the body adapts to treatment.

In addition, WellnessPro Plus comes pre-programmed with more than 900 “Autocodes” that correspond with specific conditions. Also, via the StimCard, physicians have the capability to create, store, and backup personalized patient programs.

In New Book, Physican and Pain Specialist Seeks to Answer Why We Feel Pain

Harvard-trained pain specialist Aneesh Singla, MD, offers the book, Why It Hurts: A Physician’s Insights on the Purpose of Pain, which provides a physician’s point of view into why we feel pain, and what we should do about it.

Using examples of real-life patients from his work as a pain specialist at The Rockville Center of National Spine and Pain Centers, located in Rockville, Md, Singla takes a look at how one must balance one’s desire to “cure” every type of pain with the urgent need to manage the problem of chronic pain.

Topics covered in the book include: how aggressively one should treat pain; what is good pain versus bad pain; psychological pain and its bad relationship to physical pain; and finding the root cause of pain, such as sciatica or migraines.

Additional topics include: How to apply a methodological approach to pain management; pain is a transformative process that helps one learn and grow; how to set expectations around pain; and the value of pain.

“Although Why It Hurts is about pain, on a deeper level it is about resilience, healing, and growth,” Singla says, in a media release. “Pain helps reveal the root causes of what ails us. It is a highly developed alarm system the body uses to help us prevent further injury and properly attend to our underlying conditions.”

ProtecSpine North America announces it is now the exclusive distributor of the Protec Floating Manipulative Therapy (FMT) system for all of North America.

According to the Roselle, Ill-based company, Protec FMT is a gravity-based therapeutic system for neck, back, and shoulder pain that uses the patient’s own body weight to prevent overstretching of the painful areas of the neck or back.

Floating Manipulative Therapy, a media release from the company explains, enables a reduction of spinal pressure upon suspending the lower body as well as stretching the cervical region, thus providing a significant reduction in intervertebral disc pressure and pain.

The Protec FMT system can be used in conjunction with hip joint/pelvic exercises, leg/hamstring exercises, Williams’s flexion, and McKenzie’s extension exercises, and allows the physician to employ mobilization, exercises, and stretches while the patient is experiencing spinal decompression at the same time, notes the company’s website.

Designed to complement physical therapy for chronic neck pain, the Xen Pillow 3MC from Xen Pillow Manufacturing Corporation is adjustable to user needs.

The pillow features three removable and adjustable mini cushions that provide pressure points that cradle the neck and head in an optimal position for comfort.

The contoured neck pads are also designed to help keep the pillow’s surface close to the neck to prevent sagging and stress on the joints, and to help relieve muscle tension.

The pillow’s removable and washable fabric cover wicks moisture and heat away from the head at night. In addition, the interior foam helps channel air away from the head while keeping its shape throughout the night.

“The Xen Pillow 3MC is like having a chiropractor or physical therapist making daily house calls. Keeping the head, neck and back in proper alignment is an ongoing process for those with chronic pain, and this pillow guarantees that a night of sleep will never undo any improvements,” says Xen Pillow CEO Marion Holder, in a media release.

Self-Treat Plantar Fasciitis with The Healing Sole

War veteran and orthopedic surgeon Dr Meredith Warner designs The Healing Sole flip-flops as a way to help people self-treat plantar fasciitis without, she suggests, physical therapy, injections, orthotics, and surgery.

“The Healing Sole was designed to enable the patient to self treat in an affordable manner,” says Warner, in a media release. “People love flip-flops and rarely get to wear them when they have foot pain. Putting the treatment into the form of a flip-flop not only alleviates the condition, but also increases wearability.”

The Healing Sole features a raised to lift to stretch the wearers’ PF, raised arch support to help reduce stress on the joints and pressure off the balls of the foot, a compressible inner heel to reduce pressure on the heel, a non-compressible outer heel to allow for normal foot strike, and a rocker bottom sole to help reduce muscle tension while in motion.

“Most everything else out there on the market is a very soft shoe with large arch support, which I don’t think does anything for foot health long-term. This lets the body heal itself,” Warner adds.

Aetna Approves Coverage for the Bioness StimRouter

Insurance provider Aetna Inc has given its approval for the StimRouter Neuromodulation System from Bioness Inc as medically necessary durable medical equipment for intractable neurogenic pain.

Intractable neurogenic pain, otherwise known as chronic pain that originates in the peripheral nerve, is largely treated with opioids. The patient-controlled StimRouter system is FDA cleared to reduce such pain by targeting the affected peripheral nerve.

According to Valencia, Calif-based Bioness Inc, the coverage decision from Aetna Inc, effective March 8, could open the door to a new treatment option that is an alternative to opioids.

“Payers look at the long-term impact and cost effectiveness of devices closely when determining whether or not to extend coverage to members. Up until now patients suffering from intractable neurogenic pain have had limited treatment options and often had to pay for care that is considered experimental out of pocket,” says Todd Cushman, president and CEO of Bioness, in a media release.

“We are very pleased that Aetna has recognized the value that the StimRouter and other peripherally implanted nerve stimulation systems bring to their members. Gaining coverage from payers has always been part of the StimRouter strategy, and we believe this will support our efforts in attaining coverage from insurers.”

Chattanooga, Tenn-based Richmar introduces the Hivamat 200 Evident, which is designed to deliver modality-assisted manual therapy via a process that assists the body’s natural healing processes.

Fremont, Calif-based Myoscience Inc announces that the US Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of the iovera° device, for knee osteoarthritis pain and symptom relief, for up to 90 days.

The non-ipioid and non-systemic iovera° device is engineered to block pain signals from peripheral nerves, according to a media release from Myoscience Inc.

The FDA clearance is the result of an investigation of the device, published in the journal Osteoarthris and Cartilage, that suggested that patients using iovera° reported reduced pain and symptom relief, compared to a sham treatment.

“The addition of osteoarthritis to the indications for the iovera° treatment will help in extending our innovative non-opioid therapy to more patients, especially in the growing baby-boomer population,” says Cary Vance, president and CEO of Myoscience, in the release. “I anticipate this technology to become the non-narcotic and non-systemic solution of choice to manage knee pain.”
